ICE CREAM
When it comes to desserts, we get serious about them. Ice Cream was started by the ancient Chinese and brought to Italy by Marco Polo and to America by Thomas Jefferson.
The Ice Cream industry has an 11.6 Billion impact on the US economy and supports 26,704 jobs. The majority of US ice cream and frozen desert makers have been in business for more than 50 years and many are still family-owned businesses. The busiests months for ice cream production are March through September.
At the Jersey Shore, we are blessed with some of the best ice cream shops you could ever find. Here we go and we are looking for the best.
2 Cents Plain
9305 Ventnor at Washington Avenue in Margate
It all starts with 2 Cents Plain in Margate! What makes them so special? Well, when you walk in you smell the waffle irons doing their thing. Waffles and Ice Cream leads their menu with everything homemade, except the soft serve which comes out of a machine.
There is a constant stream of folks going in. You can sit inside or out. It's a busy corner with the CVS and Wawa there so there are plenty of people to watch & observe while you devour your delicious ice cream.
Props to them as they bring you water and pretzels while you wait for your order. The salt and the water set your taste buds up for the a menu that includes Milkshakes, Specialty Sunday's Banana Splits and their specialty ice cream and waffles.
There is so much ice cream you can barely see the waffles

Jersey Cow
1600 Tilton Road in Northfield
There are always a lot of people in line and milling about eating ice cream at the Jersey Cow. The line can be long but it's worth the wait. It builds up the anticipation and the ice cream does not disappoint.
Sunday's, Cones, Milkshakes, Banana Splits you name it, they make it.

The Dairy Bar
9510 Ventnor in Margate
They have been serving Ice Cream since 1952 at the Dairy Bar in Margate. Situated right on the corner and the place is packed. Good luck finding a spot to park but it's so worth it.
Love the shakes here and the ice cream is really good. Check out this Sunday...a colorful bugger.

Custard's Last Stand
107 N Dorset Avenue in Ventnor
Custard's last stand has been serving ice cream for more than 30 years and big props to them as they are one of the few places open during the winter.
They offer over 20 homemade flavors including Sundays, Floats, Milkshakes, Blasters, Waffles and Cones.

On The Beach
Fudgy Wudgy, Orange Creamcycle, Chocolate Chipwich, Frozen Fruit Bar and the traditional Ice Cream Sandwich are all available right on the beach with the ice cream guys who pass by every five minutes.
They draw a crowd, and our favorite vendor, John, who just retired in 2023 after 50 years selling ice cream on the beach. John knew families for miles and all their kids & grandkids. God Bless you John!
We talked with Eric in action on the beach and he has an uncanny connection with John.
In this segment we are looking at the best covers of Michael Jackson songs.
We start it with Justin Timberlake shoveling the funk. JT with some fancy footwork as he grabs you from the get go with this version of "Shake your Body Down to the Ground."
We are delighted at the SALections to have Cinema Lou share his thoughts with us as a Special Contributor.
He is a pure aficiando of the world of entertainment, who is also a regular on the Arch Campbell podcast. We are delighted to have Cinema Lou and his astute observations with us.
I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice Cream. An old expression but one that seems to have more meaning these days as more and more artisan ice cream shops pop up. It used to be so simple, ice cream was ice cream, if not great, it was good and hit the mark.
Now, a new ice cream shop opens with strange flavors. Bacon infused ice cream, corn, lobster, Cheetos, avocado, garlic , olive oil, curry, pepper, goat cheese, beet flavored.
If you can eat it, it can be an ice cream flavor. And with mix-ins, the choices are endless. Good Humor used to make a great frozen treat, their ice cream bars with a chocolate bar in the middle. So tasty but no longer in production.
But my favorite has always been soft serve. And soft serve also varies by state or region. Virginia used to have a custard place called The Dairy Bar. Fantastic but defunct. The Delaware beaches has Kohr’s and Founded in the 1940s, Dairy Queen is estimated to have 7700 stores worldwide. Who wouldn’t love a good blizzard. And I just loved the Mr Softee truck. When it rolled down the street, with the iconic tune, I knew a big treat was ahead.
But, drum roll please. My all time favorite is - Carvel. Fudgie the Whale, A brown bonnet, carvel cake, flying saucer. All great but a good cup of Vanilla with sprinkles? Now you have my attention!
