HEROES

The Hero we are profiling this month is JEREMY GLICK.

The word hero gets tossed around a lot, but on one of our worst days, 9-11 there were quite a few heroes who stepped up and selflessly saved lives or fought the hijackers.

This is the story of Jeremy Logan Glick.

I came to know Jeremy as we both worked as sales reps for Giga Information Group. Jeremy, who was from Saddle River, NJ covered NYC and I had the Mid-Atlantic (PA & NJ). He was extremely talented and one of the nicest guys you could know.

The company brought us all in for a training in NYC and there was distracting construction noise throughout the session. It was so loud that often, you couldn't hear what was being said and the trainers would wait and say it again. Jeremy was on one side of the room and I was on the other. We would just look at each other and gesture, did you get that? Me neither.

After the training, I called him to catch up and compare notes. We were at similar times in our lives. My wife and I had bought a house we would settle in for 23 years and Jeremy had just found the home that he'd share with his wife Liz. Our daughter was 3 at the time and Jeremy's wife was pregnant with their first child on the way.

After delivering back to back President Club performances at Giga, Jeremy was recruited to a firm called Vividence in San Francisco where they made him a Regional Sales Manager overseeing the reps on the East Coast. As part of his work there, Jeremy would have to go out to San Francisco every few months for meetings with the company executives.

He was scheduled to fly out to San Francisco on September 10th but their was a fire at the Newark airport so the flights were cancelled. No worries, he thought, I'll just fly out in the morning.

United flight 93 would leave from Newark on 9-11 headed for San Francisco. While Jeremy's flight was in the air, three planes had already crashed - 2 went into the World Trade Center in NYC and one crashed into the Pentagon.

With internet access, the passengers on Flight 93 learned what was going on. Jeremy called his in-laws house to speak with his wife who was staying there while he was away. When Liz heard his voice she felt relief that he was safe as all heck was breaking loose in NYC. Jeremy calmly told his wife that his plane had the hijackers as well, but not to worry as he had a plastic knife and fork from breakfast.

While Jeremy was a great guy, you would not want to get into a fight with him. He was built like a rugby player and was a national judo champion. He spoke with his wife for over a half hour telling her it would be OK and that she will be fine caring for their 3 month old daughter, Emmy (short for Emerson) if he didn't make it home.

With Todd Beamer, Lou Nacke, Mark Bingham and Tom Burnett they came up with a plan to rush the attackers and Jeremy was among those who fought to stop the hijackers from accomplishing their mission.

In the face of all that adversity in his last conversation with his wife, he told Liz - you have to be happy for Emmy. Shortly thereafter he said it's time to go - we're making our move now.

Not only was his daughter just 3 months old, but Jeremy had another job lined up so he wouldn't have to travel to San Francisco much longer. He was just 31 at the time of his death.

Jeremy was one of many heroes on that terrible day that had the courage to fight against the worst odds and do it to save lives. The hijackers who were targeting a building in DC did not make it there thanks to the brave souls who rushed them leading to the plane coming down in Shanksville, PA.

Jeremy is missed by all who knew and loved him. Especially his wife, daughter and family. We owe all the heroes from 9-11 a great debt of thanks for their selfless heroics.

On the plus side, Jeremy's daughter Emmy did a Ted Talk on surviving tragedy and dealing with grief a few years back when she was just 15. What an inspiring and beautiful young woman Emmy has grown up to be.

Her Dad would be so proud.

Heroes – Footnotes

We all have heroes. It’s really important to let our heroes know how much they mean to us. Write them a letter, pick up the phone or go see them.

Let them know that they have made an impact on you. You will gain so much more in that conversation, while making them feel appreciated. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

LOVE SONGS

A new song every month to add to your playlist & get you in the mood.

MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE - STING

Sometimes simple really works. A gorgeous piano arrangement with Sting's light, natural vibrato make this song work so well.

The movie is incredibly sad, but the love story is a special one. Check out Sting in his delivery of My One and Only Love.

The lyrics in this song are so good.

"The touch of your hand is like heaven,

A heaven I've never known."

DAY TRIP – CAPE MAY

So what’s on your travel list?

Cape May, also known as the Jersey Cape is one of the top destinations in the Garden State. More than 12-million people visit Cape May on a yearly basis.

Known for its beautiful beaches and boardwalk, Cape May will dazzle you with the Victorian architecture of its many Bed and Breakfast establishments.

For a little shopping head to the Washington Street Mall and on the left side toward Congress Hall, be sure to check out Uncle Charlie's homemade ice cream. It's so good and worth the ride itself.

Cape May has a fantastic zoo, amusement rides and some of the best restaurants you'll find. Whatever you are in the mood for, you can find a great eatery in walking distance. The Washington Inn, Iccara Italian Bistro and Elaine's are a few of my favorites.

If you're looking for a place to grab a nightcap, head to Jackson Street and the Ebbitt Room.

Cape May is definitely the place to treat yourself. Nothing like a carriage ride thru the Cape as the sunsets with a guide to tell you stories about this wonderful town.

Whether you're there for a day trip or a few days, Cape May is wonderful place to visit, get away from your daily worries and take in the best that New Jersey has to offer.

Everyone is so happy....on the way to Cape May!

REUNION

A special nite was in the making for the 50th reunion of the Neumann Goretti Class of 1974 in Philadelphia on Friday, September 13th.

Holy Cannoli's, we may be getting up there where the candles cost more than the cake, but damn we look good. More than 200 classmates turned out for this special night.

Congrats to Bobby "will that be cash or cash" Avelino for winning the 50/50 drawing & going home with $665 in $charole.

Bernie brought his red mustang convertible to the reunion which became one of the more popular photo op settings. What a good looking crew we have here!

There were moments went it seemed like the reunion was an audition for the Soprano's with all the Goombahs striking a pose.

It was great seeing so many familiar faces. This is Rich Giovanetti, a grade school buddy from St Ed's with his wife Patty.

The highlight for me was seeing Mary DiJoseph Cedrone for the 1st time since 1978. We went to college together and had many great times at Cabrini.

When I walked in Mary, who was on the alumni committee was helping with the name tags. When we saw each other we screamed and then hugged it out. So good to see her, while we were catching up, a guy asked for help with his name tag. Off she went to help him and we caught up later. Doesn't she look great.

As the night was winding down the DJ had played 7 or 8 dance songs in a row, so I went up with a request.

Said yo buddy most of the people in here are damn near 70, can you play a freaking slow song.

It was a fantastic night of friendships renewed while strolling down memory lane.

This reunion was among the best events put on over the years. All of the get togethers were good, this 50th reunion had everybody buzzing and feeling good. Was really great to see so many familiar faces and everyone was smiling all night long.

Special thanks to Jeanne for coordinating a Jitney to take the Shore folks to the reunion. We had a ball, especially on the way back recapping all the highlights from such a great night.

Some excitement before we close it out as this table got flashed by someone who shall remain nameless, but we know who you are...lol.

A great job by the Alumni Committee for putting the event together with all the right touches & thanks to the wonderful Goretti women for closing the night with a stirring rendition of their Alma mater.

ARTS

Kudo's to our nephew Jake for playing the role of Mark in Rent at the Atlanta Opera House. Mark is the narrator and filmmaker in the show.

In the ARTS ATL review, "Jake Levy, with solid vocals, was an earnest and sympathetic Mark, the budding filmmaker."

HUMOR

GREG DAVIES

Greg is known for telling hysterical stories and does not disappoint with this performance on the Graham Norton show. Pay particular attention to Ryan Gosling who cannot seem to hold it together.

BAD GIRLS

Toot Toot Ahhhhh Beep Beep

Our very 1st Bad Girl can't be the sweet Keri Russell from Felicity and the Waitress film. Looks like Keri is all grown up.

Not sure what type of pilates class we have going on here, but I do believe a lot of people would be interested in signing up for this session.

By the way, Keri is fantastic in the Diplomat on Netflix.

Season 2 will drop on Halloween. If you have not seen Season 1 of the Diplomat, go check it out.

The Diplomat is an entertaining political thriller that gets 2 huge thumbs up from Cinema Lou, our man about town who is all knowing about films & streams.

GRATITUDE

What are you grateful for and why?

KINDNESS

Kindness doesn't cost anything and it's also contagious so it has a double benefit.

When is the last time, you have done something for someone expecting nothing in return?

Have you ever seen a homeless person and wondered what happened to them. How did they get there? What would it mean for them to have a simple cup of coffee on a cold day?

Kindness can bring many blessings to your life. It can as simple as helping someone lift their bag into the overhead compartment.

"How do we change the world?

One act of random kindness at a time."

...Morgan Freeman

A recent Harvard study found that we feel better when we act in service to others. We really are all in this together.

CHALLENGE

Last month we talked about your legacy. How do you want to be remembered?

For October, let's take a few moments and think about how we can do something for someone else.

FYI...committing acts of kindness is also proven to lower your blood pressure, so it has health benefits while also making you feel good. If your blood pressure is elevated - just maybe a little kindness is all you need.

TRUTH or PANTS on FIRE

Are you ready for the Tom Cruise edition of Truth or Pants on Fire. Do you believe these statements or are they baloney?

1. He still wears the underwear from Risky Business.

2. He believes all psychological disorders can be cured with Vicks Vaporub.

3. He keeps a cell phone in his back pants pocket, so he can tell friends - to call his ass.

TRADITIONS

A group of avid Philly sports fans have been getting together in Ventnor Heights for more than 10 years.

The room that hosts the get togethers has been decorated with sports and casino memorabilia in every available spot creating a great atmosphere to watch any sports event.

Then there is the food...homemade lasagna, roast pork sandwiches, chips, dips, and anything you could want to drink. This is even better than tailgating, as its a home game with a party every NFL Sunday.

With the excitement of a new NFL Season upon us , The SALections was fortunate to join these passionate sports fans for the Eagles opener vs the Packers.

While Drew Bello is the host for these get togethers, Jerry Persiano, one of the long time members of the group talks about how the idea came together.

Take us home Kenny at one of the all time great venues - the Redwoods.

We are closing out the second edition of the SALections with Kenny Loggins performing "Conviction of the Heart"

SALections of the Month

The SALections started as a TV sports segment years ago in Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia. We were fortunate to have a healthy following and the local newspaper in Norfolk called it the best local TV sports segment. Over the years, I often thought how can I broaden the SALections out to appeal to anyone, not just sports fans. During a game of banana grams, the idea of dynamic categories that would appeal to anyone was the light bulb moment. Our newsletter began in September 2024 and is available on our website - www.salectionsofthemonth.com
